A Case Study in Wealth Built the Right Way
More than twenty years ago, a young software engineer attended one of our financial seminars. He had a good income, a bright future, and the same question most high-earning professionals carry quietly with them: "I'm earning decent money — so why doesn't it feel like I'm getting ahead?"
The answer wasn't complicated. There was no structure. No plan. Just income arriving and, somehow, departing. We changed that.
What We Did Together
We started with the basics done well — a comprehensive financial plan initially built around a monthly RRSP contribution. Automatic, disciplined, and consistent through every market high and low. That single habit became the foundation of everything that followed.
When the family received a financial gift, we helped them direct it intentionally: a portfolio for each child, and Registered Education Savings Plans designed to fully fund whatever educational path each child chose to pursue. With the Canada Education Savings Grant compounding alongside long-term investment growth, the money was there when the time came — fully funded, fully flexible, completely on their terms.
As the relationship grew, his wife, a medical professional, was generating surplus income through her professional corporation. We structured a corporate portfolio to grow efficiently and tax-effectively — built specifically to avoid the passive income rules that quietly erode the small business tax rate for so many incorporated professionals. Over time, that portfolio has performed extremely well, not just in returns, but in what the family actually keeps.
We also opened Tax-Free Savings Accounts for both spouses and maintained a living financial plan throughout — revisited regularly to confirm they remained on track and to give them the confidence to make decisions from security rather than anxiety.
Twenty Years Later
Today, this family is financially independent even though they are still working. Their children will shortly be pursuing educations without constraint. And they are now positioned to give their own children the same head start they once received — because someone helped them plan for it, two decades in advance.
None of this happened through brilliant timing or unusual luck. It happened through a plan, consistently followed, by a family who had the patience to let it work.
If this story sounds familiar — we'd welcome the conversation. The strategies that built this family's independence are available to you today. The most important step is the first one.
This case study is illustrative of the financial planning process and outcomes a disciplined, long-term approach can achieve. Individual results will vary. This is not intended as specific financial advice.
